The seniors welcomed Tiverton to Sidmouth last Thursday, and were looking to build on the one point advantage earned in the away match in July. Despite the recent poor weather, the course was once more presented in first class condition, something that was not lost on the Tiverton captain in his after dinner comments. First off was John Hicks partnered on this occasion by Peter Emery, as John had wisely decided he would have to go for quality if he were to eventually register a win. A solid 4 and 2 margin provided a welcome first point for Sidmouth, but Rob Owen and Tony Bentall lost a very close game 2 and 1 to put the match back to all square. Having been cast aside by Mr Hicks, I was next off with Mike Flattley. Due to some confusion, admittedly an unusual occurrence for senior golfers, the Tiverton team had arrived to find they were one player short. While sympathetic, Flatters and I were a little disturbed to discover that Sidmouth senior Grant Whillance would be playing for the opponents, and would probably feel obliged to share his extensive knowledge of our course's idiosyncrasies with his partner. Despite this we took the opportunity to discuss our mutual loyalties with Grant, and managed to secure a 6 and 4 win. Terry Hopkins and Colin Bedford followed with a tough game, but secured a half to keep us in front, leaving Roger Bawden and Les Pratt to put the match result beyond doubt with their 2 and 1 win. Last pair out was Barry Jones partnered by John Bainbridge, and they didn't disappoint. They also won by 2 and 1 to give us a three point margin on the day, and home and away wins against Tiverton.Result: Sidmouth 4 1/2 Tiverton 1 1/2.
