Honiton Town played just their third league game of the season at their Mountbatten Park home and made up for a lack of action in front of their faithful followers by putting Heavitree United Reserves to the sword to the tune of a 7-0 defeat.

Town began like a side that has not played too much football of late, but once they found their feet in the game it was they who broke the deadlock with Darren Witt heading home at the far post.

In a devastating spell Town added two more to race into a three-goal lead inside 20 minutes and that was effectively ‘game over’! The side added three more before the break to go in with a 6-0 lead with the other first half scorers being Joe Mulhall (2), Matt Brown, Lewis Couch and Chris Long.

In the second half, with their play noticeably more conservative, they scored just once more through Brett Sellick.

Steve Trenchard epitomised the spirit in the team with some terrific tackling – even long after the outcome had been settled – and a superb save five minutes from time gave goalkeeper Matty Long yet another Town clean sheet.

Town boss Kev Blackwell said: “The lads produced some excellent inter-play with sharp passing and clinical finishing. It was always going to be a case of ‘foot-off-the-gas’ after the break and a perfectionist would probably argue that we ought to have netted more. However this was always for me a potential banana skin of a fixture and I have to commend the players for their collective attitude. It really was out of the top drawer for this game.”

Blackwell continued: “ I really do believe that this team has amazing potential. The lads have to have the same belief, and although it would be nice to see a few more locals at the club supporting both teams I can not fault the ambition of the committee and those that work hard behind the scenes to put the club in a good place. I know John Lewis (Town reserve ream boss), shares the same drive and ambition to put both teams back on the local footballing map, and the signs are certainly good!”

On Saturday Town face an Alphington side they defeated in the reverse fixture a fortnight ago in Exeter. The Mountbatten Park game kicks-off at 2.15pm.
