Horne try seals Sidmouth Colts success over Newton Abbot Colts

Sidmouth Colts 14, Newton Abbot Colts 10 There was very little to choose between these sides with both enjoying long periods of pressure and both defending well, writes Dan Goddard.

Sidmouth perhaps just had the edge in attack, but Newton were strong at the set piece and finished the game well being denied a win by good cover defence by the Sidmouth backs.

Haydon Down had another excellent game capped by a memorable line break which took play deep into the Newton defence. He was also at the heart of the best piece of Sidmouth play which deservedly led to a try for the impressive Lewis Horne.

The momentum from a strong run by Kearn was maintained by Down at the ruck and with quick ball and the Newton defence on the back foot, Dan Powell ran hard into midfield and found Horne on a good angle to touch down near the posts. This try regained the lead for Sidmouth having been in front through Wells Burr, who had another fine game, alongside Carlisle in the Sidmouth midfield.

The game was another step forward for the Colts who, by their own admission, have plenty of room and opportunity to improve. With four players in the 1st team and a couple of injuries, it demonstrates good depth in the squad and a healthy competition for places across the whole team. This week the Colts play Tiverton who have started their season well, and the game kicks-off on the Blackmore at 3pm.
