Competitors in the Sunday individual stableford competition at Sidmouth were a tad more fortunate with the weather, writes George Carr.

The players who took part in the latest Winter League event merely had to contend with occasional sleet driven on a biting east wind - what fun they must have had!

Cold or not, it did not prevent Craig Melluish from carding a very impressive 43 points (seven better then par) to take first place and a voucher worth £43.50 to spend in the Pro shop.

No doubt result will lead to a review by the powers that be of the Melluish handicap which currently stands at 19.

In second place, a point behind on 42 was James Spiller, playing off an 11 handicap and must have been pleased with his £26 voucher.

Lester Wilmington claimed third place and a voucher worth £17.50 - very good golf in difficult circumstances.

No one would have been more satisfied on this cold morning than Simon Knowles, whose fourth place on the day yielded another seven points towards his Winter League tally of 40 points, giving him an unassailable lead in that competition it would seem - well done Simon.

Among other notable events during the week was Ray Gunstone’s hole-in-one on the 176 yard par- three 12th hole. Eye witnesses on Wednesday claim the ball flew straight down the flag without touching the sides of the hole, but they were 176 yards away!

Next week we find two teams competing in the first leg of the Titherington Trophy, an opportunity, also, for members to help our popular club captain, John Rockey to celebrate his 70th birthday - a happy birthday from us all John - enjoy!
