Sidmouth Ladies A team produced some fine tennis in the last of the warm weather to overcome Torquay B at home.

Vivienne Bess, (captain) and Di Kendall-Torry defeated the B pairing 6-4 6-2 but found themselves in seesaw match with their counterparts in a rubber that went all the way to wire. In the championship tie-break, a disputed line call at match point to the home side resulted in the point being replayed, this time it didn’t go in their favour and their opponents capitalised coming out 7-5, 1-6, 11-9 winners. Sidmouth’s second pairing of Nicki Keele and Mary Dean in their first matchplay together proved a strong combination winning their first rubber convincingly, 6-1 6-0. They continued to dominate in the second coming through 7-5 6-3. A satisfying 7-2 victory for the home side.

?Sidmouth’s mixed team was in action again after a month without matches, at home to Lympstone. Against the lively and noisy backdrop of junior cricket, the first pairing of Debbie Snelgrove (captain) and Peter Fung were embroiled in two lengthy contests both going to championship tie-breakers. They were unsuccessful in converting the first against a pair who worked well together and used their badminton prowess to good effect at the net. However, the home pair’s determination paid off in a very tightly fought tie-break where they came back from 8-4 down to take the rubber. Mark Heywood and Lesley Cranston got off to a good start against their counterparts coming through 6-1 6-4. Having started well in their second match, leading 4-2 in the first set, they let the errors creep in allowing their opponents to gain a grip, indeed, they only won one further game in a limp second set. Final match result, honours even in points, a 5-5 draw.
