Two rinks of Sidmouth ladies went to Budleigh on Wednesday morning losing on both rinks and by 32 shots to 53. This was the last ladies’ match of the season and overall they have won 11 matches, and lost 10, write Sue and Peter Mison.
Also on Wednesday, the men held captain’s day where, by tradition, the captain’s teams play against the vice captain’s teams with a tea prepared by the ladies between two afternoon sessions.
On this occasion the vice captain’s teams were successful winning overall by 75-70. Congratulations to the winning triples rink playing for the vice captain in the first session, Bert Hague, Mike Daw and Bill Turner with a score of 17-9. The winning rink playing for the captain in the second session was Ken Bridgman, Chas Coates, Derek Mountford and Norman Brimson with a score of 24-11. It was good to see a number of invited guests including past presidents, chairmen and captains.
On Saturday, the last Sunrise Umbrella of the season was held with a superb Chinese meal prepared by Ronnie and Sylvia Cook served between the two bowling sessions.
Over 30 members were treated to a very tasty soup served with prawn crackers, followed by lemon chicken and sweet and sour pork with egg fried rice, followed by lychees and mandarin oranges . Ronnie and Sylvia must be congratulated on the very high standard of cuisine they have produced during this season’s series of Sunrise Umbrellas.
The overall winner of the Sunrise over the season was Ron Graham. Every player who had entered the competition received a prize and it was a most enjoyable occasion.
On Sunday supporters from Sidmouth went to Exonia to see Jill Bishop play Julie Grant from Honion in the semi final of the Champion of Champions. After a slow start Jill managed to level with Julie who then pulled away again with some superb shots. Once again Jill pulled several shots back before finally losing by 16-21. It was a great game to watch and all were treated to some extremely accurate bowling on both sides but, on the day, Julie was a worthy winner who drew brilliantly throughout the match.
On Tuesday morning Pat Pritchard, Pat Harvie and Jill Bishop went to Exonia to play their County Triples semi final against a team from North Devon. They all played an excellent game winning by 17-5 and now go through to the County Final to be held on Friday 13 at Exonia at 10am against a team from Mayflower, Plymouth.
Also on Tuesday there were two sessions of the Ladies versus the Gents at home, always a fiercely contested, but friendly, game.
The ladies won in the morning by two rinks to one and by 48-42, but in the afternoon the men took their revenge winning by two rinks to one and by 59-34 and gaining overall victory by 19 shots.
Please note, ladies, it was three rinks all, although the gentlemen insist that it is the shots that count!
