Active Devon are urging sports and physical activity clubs across the county to ensure they make their nominations for this year’s Devon Sports Awards before the closing date of noon today, Friday, January 6.

The Sports Awards are an annual celebration and acknowledgement of the achievements of sportspeople, clubs, teams and officials. The award categories previously open to volunteers within sport only, now feature new categories such as Team of the Year and Sports Performer of the Year. It is hoped a new influx of talented and promising players, teams and clubs will be nominated for their contribution to sport across the county.

The Devon Sports Awards can already count esteemed athletes such as Olympic Weightlifter Michaela Breeze MBE (2007 winner), Robin Brew, coach to Olympic silver medallist Heather Fell (2008 winner) and Olympic Fencing Champion Gyorgy Felletar (2009 winner) amongst previous winners.

Helen Pope, Active Devon Marketing Manager adds “As a result of their success at last years Sports Awards, Active Devon nominated a number of last years winners to be Olympic Torchbearers and we have recently heard that two of them have been contacted with conditional offers to take part in this chance of a lifetime opportunity to bear the torch across the county.”

There are eight categories to nominate against this year, plus the special Outstanding Contribution Award taken from category winners. The nomination process is quick and easy with nomination forms available to complete online, or to download at www.activedevon.org/awards2012.
