Ottery St Mary ran Isca to the wire in the Devon League when both clubs finished with six wins apiece but the deciding factor for the title was a countback on the number of games won during the competition. With 27 wins to 25 Isca just snatched the title from the Otters.

Other places went to Pig on the Hill (3rd) Chudleigh (4th) and Village Inn (5th).

In the National Regional Championships at Mill Rythe, three Otters, Pete Smith, Rose Thatcher and Dave West represented Devon, while John Thatcher acted in his capacity as an official umpire. Newly promoted to Division 1, Devon came up against stiff opposition and were narrowly pushed to last place with 17 points by Wales and Anglia with 18 each.

At the awards ceremony John Thatcher became an Honorary Life Member of the English Petanque Association for his services to the game at all levels.

Ottery St Mary take a trip to Cornwall on October 21 in the second round of the European Cup Qualifying competition.
