Just two weeks after their previous encounter which Newton Poppleford won easily, the neighbours met again.

This time, Tipton’s batters fared better, helped by a century from Phil Tolley. His two early partners made just 8 runs, Ben Kidson caught by Tom Clay off Ash Perram and Nick Wright bowled by Chris Davis.

A 99-run partnership followed, with Matt Davies who scored 31 before being caught by debutant Ruurd Hartstra off Ash Chessum. John Buckland’s innings was ended when run out.

Louis Adey took two wickets, Dave Thayre caught behind by Kenny Clay for 9 and Sam Stone bowled for 0. Phil Tolley retired having made his 61st Tipton century off 98 balls with the score on 189-7. Another running mix-up saw Mark Channon run out for 4, but Owen Smith took advantage of a few wayward legside balls to hit an unbeaten 25 as Tipton closed on 231-7.

Newton Poppleford started their reply in style. Tom Clay hit the first ball of the innings off David Birch for a six over mid-wicket and repeated the dose with his third. However, next ball he was stumped by Thayre.

His replacement Ash Chessum hit his first ball for a boundary, then Matt Raistrick hit two boundaries off Owen Smith’s first over, so the score had advanced to 24-1 off just two overs. Birch then struck twice, as an aggressive shot saw Raistrick bowled. Chessum followed him one run later, also bowled.

Owen Smith bowled Hartstra for a single, then Chris Davis, who had already plundered a six and a four, failed to clear the deep mid-on boundary where Matt Davies was lurking and departed for 15, Phil Wright the bowler. Smith (2-11) bowled Liam Dalton for a single leaving the visitors innings in tatters at 44-6.

Louis Adey did manage to improve matters, aided firstly by Richard Coombs who made 10 before top edging a ball to gulley where Sam Stone took a good catch, then Kieran Phillips (5) bowled by Buckland. Adey was caught by Ben Kidson on 49 off Stone’s bowling and the innings ended on 116 when Perram was bowled by Buckland.
