Sunday saw a fourball better ball competition played at Sidmouth, writes John Barnard.

Two teams of two play with the best score for each team counting off three quarters of full handicap.

The cold weather of the past week continued which meant there were 16 temporary greens.

These vary according to different courses, but at Sidmouth, the ‘temps’ are mainly set well in front of the main greens and the holes are the size of buckets! This should mean good scores and this Sunday, they certainly did.

Leading the way were Stuart Ruffle and Geoff Lory, the latter who scored a hole in one on the 15th. Any ‘ace’ needs an element of luck, but that doesn’t diminish the excitement of getting one.

They scored 48 points (36 points mean playing to the card), the ace getting five of them.

In second place, also with 48 points, were Moray Bosence and Jim Anderton. Moray was on fire (not good for an electrician) scoring most of the points with Jim backing him up when necessary. In third spot was David Burgess and Graham Davies, also with 48 points. Each scored on nine holes so they played equally well, but will be cursing their luck as they told me they left at least five points out on the course.

Next Sunday sees a Texas Scramble with a big field. Let’s hope the weather improves so we can get back onto main greens for the competitions.
