Lovering scores hole-in-one at Honiton

Last Tuesday at Honiton Golf Club, over 30 played in the monthly mixed greensomes, writes John Pawley.
The clear winners, with 39 points, were Pam Knibb and Charlie Doherty with Jan Portlock and Brian Morrison second on countback with 36. Third place went to Hilda Hoepelman and Ken Wood and Linda McLaughlin and Cyril Dann were fourth with 35.
It was a shot-gun start for the ladies’ stableford three-ball better ball competition. The winners were Jenny Raison, Sally Chapman and Jackie Seager with 41 points, followed closely by Henrietta Bradshaw, Jan Portlock and Liz Wood on 40.
Third home were Tricia Swindell, Pat Hanes and Cherry Liell, with their final placing determined by countback.
The 9-hole competition was won by Sue Calver, Linda Northover and June Hodge. .
Nearly 70 seniors’ competed for the Ron Blatchford Trophy – now a one round stableford competition.
David Woodruff won Division Two and the trophy with a splendid score of 39 points – it also led to his handicap being cut.
Second was Phil Faulkner (34) followed by Tom Chapman (33) getting the nod on count-back from Tom Stanton with Ken Wood (32).
Division One was won by David Morris with 37 points, with Max Pipe (36) and Paul Ritchie (35). Mike Stroud followed then Alan Devenny – all on 35 points.
Leading, after the first round of the Club Championship, was junior captain Ben Phillips with his 71 followed by Mark Tierney (73) and four times champion Mark Gillard (74). In the second round Ben and Mark, playing in the same group, had all to play for on the last hole with Ben eventually holding on for the win, by a single shot after shooting a gross 76.
Lowest round of the day went to Peter Clarke who shot a 70 – and special mention to Jason Lovering for his hole in one on the fourth.
