Masterful Gosney at back

This proved to be another frustrating match for Tipton who once again created the vast majority of chances without getting any luck, writes Richard Williams.

Wellington were awarded a penalty in the first minute which was poorly taken and struck wide of the goal. A minute later Adam Connett had his shot saved by the Wellington keeper.

Tipton then had a 20 minute spell where they put in plenty of effort but much of it was rushed and frantic and they could have done with some “whale music” to calm them down!

They were caught out on 18 minutes when Wellington took the lead with a header from a corner.

After this, Tipton did settle down and had the better of the play. On 29 minutes Kevin Sexton had a chance on the right of the box but his close range shot was saved.

Eight minutes later Jamie Connett did well to take the ball off a forward at left back, then run with the ball up the touchline before playing a great ball to his brother Adam who was fouled before he had a chance to shoot.

Adam Connett again went close a minute before half time when he received a good ball from Kevin Sexton. He rounded a defender but his shot went just wide of the post.

The second half followed the same pattern and Tipton keeper Dale Strawbridge did not have to make a save throughout. On 53 minutes Tipton put together a fine move which ended with Jody Freeman unable to get a good connection on his shot, which went wide.

On 73 minutes Adam Connett had a overhead shot in the penalty area which went just wide followed shortly afterwards by a 30 yard effort from Neil Gooding which went high and wide.

On 83 minutes there was a mel�e in the Wellington box and somehow they managed to clear the ball off their line. On 88 minutes a long throw went to Glen Salter in the middle of the pitch, who knocked a ball to Gooding on the left who crossed onto the head of Jake Freeman whose header was well saved.

Right on the final whistle Tipton had another effort appear to be saved by a defenders’ hand but, unfortunately, the referee had blown a fraction of a second earlier for a Tipton infringement and Wellington managed to keep Tipton goalless.

This was a battling performance by the whole team but Man of the Match honours went to James Gosney who put on a masterful display at centre back.

Beer were another side to sit out Saturday’s fixtures.

The Fishermen are at Hatherleigh Town on Saturday.

The North Devon side have won four and lost four of their eight home games so far this term.

Beer have won three times on the road, keeping a clean sheet on each occasion.

Beer Albion Reserves were single goal winners in their game against Culm United that was played at Sampford Peverell.

What’s more, there was something rather special about the only goal of the game. It was scored by Justin Adkin who headed home a Josh Harrison corner.

Not only did the header win the game but it was also the first ever senior goal scored by Adkin and on his 21st birthday too!”
