Sidmouth Town Reserves returned to winning ways with a 3-0 success at Wellington Town Reserves in a Macron League Division One meeting.

Plying up the significant slope at the Somerset club’s ground in the first half it was the Vikings that set the tone.

With Scott Hughes hold up play being integral to most of the good football that the Vikings produced this allowed Jake Boyland and Ferenc Bodor to get in support of their strike partner.

Time and again Bodor was put through out wide, but his return was a 50 per cent success rate on his final ball. Hughes was then upended in the penalty area only for the referee to wave play on!

Midway through the half Hughes showed great strength and pace to beat his marker and slot home the opening goal. Both Boyland and Bodor had chances to add to the tally, but couldn’t quite make it pay. At the other end of the pitch the young back four of Louis Spalding, Ben Miller, Matt Colson and Matt Salter were coping well with anything that Wellington could muster.

Robert Glukowski was relieved to see a well struck shot hit the bar shortly before the break. Will Jenkins somehow managed to put the ball over the bar from two yards out as the interval loomed.

The second period saw the home side have more possession in their own half as Town sat deeper playing down the slope. The counter attack was Towns plan and again this was put to good use. Fresh legs were needed, so Tom Moore and Ben Goodier were summoned from the bench for the final third of the contest.

Moore showed some nice touches out wide and went close to adding a second before he showed great determination to first win a tackle and second, to be alert enough to come on to the breaking ball and struck it into the net via the far post.

Within minutes Goodier made a fantastic run and Damien Armes slotted a slide rule pass for Goodier to prod home the third and final goal to round off a most satisfactory afternoon’s performance from the Town side.

Joint boss Paddy Thomas said: “In games where you are dominant you can be caught out not taking chances.

“We created quite a few, but looked solid at the back. Ben Miller showed what a versatile, quality player he is, playing at centre half and strolling through the game. His anticipation of most situations and being dominant throughout, gave a platform for others to perform.

“In the last 30 minutes we fielded seven players under-18 years, but that did change somewhat when Anthony Griffiths was introduced! However, his presence was a key factor in the youngsters easing their way through to the finish.”

On Saturday (April 14), Town’s second team are away at Colyton at a venue to be announced.
