Sidmouth Town Reserves went down 4-1 in their final Macron Devon and Exeter League game of the season.
If the score line suggests a fairly straightforward victory for the home side – it was anything but!
The Vikings, who travelled to Mid Devon with a scratch side, were only 2-1 down at half-time and it was only after the break when a much-improved home side punished Town with two top corner finishes midway through the second half.
Earlier, Cullompton had taken the lead when a free header eluded Rob Glukowski in the Town goal. Scott Hughes then replied, turning his marker and smashing the ball in off the upright after 10 minutes.
For the rest of the half Town opened up the hosts’ defence, with Ferenc Bodor causing problems on the left. Hughes went close again and Joe Miller was probing away on the opposite flank. Bodor himself hit the post and wasted another two good opportunities he would normally take.
As it was, those missed chances would come back to haunt the Vikings. However, despite a poor finish to the campaign this has been a productive season for the Town second team with the highlight undoubtedly the winning of the Devon Senior Cup last month.
There was a serious ‘family affair’ feel during the latter stages of the match at Cullompton with no fewer than four Millers on the pitch at the same time as father Jon Miller, joined sons Joe, Ben and Jack to see out the game – and the season.
