Sidmouth Under-16s were 42-29 victors when they made the short trip across to Exmouth for their final Fisherman’s Cup group game.

The young Chiefs had much to play for as they were looking to continue their unbeaten run in this season’s competition.

Captain Louis Stamp won the toss and opted to play into the face of a strong wind in the first half.

As had been expected, the home team made a powerful start and, using the conditions to their full advantage, pinned Sidmouth back in their 22.

The Chiefs’ defence was solid for the opening 15 minutes, but the pressure eventually told and the home team’s powerful number eight picked up from the base of a scrum to open the scoring.

The Sidmouth response was good and they began to take a foothold in the contest, gaining territory and starting to apply their own pressure and a quick tap penalty opened up a gap and Cole Monaghan was on the end to dot the ball down. The home side, who clearly carried a number of different threats, struck back with their fleet-footed winger sprinting 60 yards to the line for the second Exmouth try. Just before half-time, when Sidmouth were awarded a free-kick on the halfway line, scrum half Archie Rowe took it quickly and found Jack Jenkins in space.

The hooker linked nicely with Ollie Jones, who raced clear to complete the first-half scoring and send Sidmouth into the break trailing 12-10.

The second half saw Sidmouth enjoy the advantage of the elements and, when full back Seb Stewart fielded a kick, he found space before releasing Cole Monaghan for his second try of the morning.

Once ahead, the confidence grew through the Sidmouth ranks, and Monaghan added two further tries with his hat-trick try being a superb solo raid as he first collected the kick-off before racing through the home defence.

Charlie Corr also got on the try scoring list as Sidmouth took complete charge of the contest.

Exmouth did hit back with a couple of further tries from their dominant number eight, but Sidmouth were always ‘in charge’ and they struck with the final try of the game when MyKyta, Sidmouth’s Ukrainian winger from St Johns School, scorched down the right wing to score in the corner and complete the scoring.
