Mumford Trophy triumph for Sidmouth Four
- Credit: Archant
The Mumford Trophy is a county-wide quiz on the rules of golf, and simple though that may sound to the uninitiated, the rules of golf are legion and seemingly without end, even to life-long golfers, and so it is a brave golfer indeed who offers him or herself up for examination on the subject, writes George Carr.
Bravely forward then, Margaret Deuce, Paul Lewis, Chris Timms and John Barnard on Sidmouth’s behalf - and how well they acquitted themselves. After battling through the opening stages they found themselves a daunting eight points behind Downes Crediton though six clear of Bigbury Golf Club, the third contender in the final.
After a tense last round they closed the gap on Crediton and in the definitive quick-fire two-minute finale they managed 15 questions with 11 correct whilst Crediton managed 14 questions, but only nine correct answers and so Sidmouth completed a magnificent comeback to win by the narrowest of margins 59.5 to 58.
Their handsome £90 first prize they hope to donate to the Sidmouth captain’s charity - while we would hope the trophy itself would be presented to them on annual prize-giving night. Well done, the team!
