Sidmouth Captain of the Day, Brian Rice, was playing against his former club, Libbaton, where he had been a member for 15 years. He said: “it was great to meet some old friends and catch up on all the news”.

Brian and his partner, Len Wright, had a cracking match with the Libbaton Captain, Clive Squire, and Brian’s good friend Ron Screech. It fluctuated both ways before Brian and Len went 1 up on the 17th and managed to get a half on the 18th to win the match 1 up.

Phil Spencer and Charles Brown had an even tighter match. They were 1 up on the 18th tee but then lost the last hole to finish all square.

Steve Nunn and Paul Blay won their match 3 and 2 but Mike Davis and David Bromage lost theirs by a similar score. This was followed by Chris Grubb and Vernon Ruffle also losing 3 and 2.

Thankfully, Dave Cowler and Gareth Stephens saved the day, coming in with a great 4 and 3 win to give Sidmouth a 3 ½ to 2 ½ win. Unfortunately, Sidmouth lost 4 to 2 away at Libbaton, so this meant Libbaton won overall by 6 ½ to 5 ½.

Sidmouth Seniors started their away match with Exminster in a strong position, having won the home leg 5-1.

Captain Brian Rice and Phil Spencer, the current Seniors Captain, recovered from a slow start to win 4 and 2. The second pairing of Dave Cowler and Les Pratt had a much tighter match which ended all square, but Steve Nunn and Gareth Stephens won comfortably 4 and 3.

Len Wright and Paul Blay were all square after 16 holes but managed to win both the 17th and 18th to finish 2 up, and Colin Macklin and Bill Hayes continued the winning streak and came in winning 2 and 1.

The final pair of Mike Davis and Charles Brown were the only losers on the day but, thankfully, this was not crucial as Sidmouth had already done enough to win the match.

Over the two legs, Sidmouth won 9 ½ to 2 ½.
