With such a marvellous response to the launch of the junior tennis coaching programme that started on July 30 and concluded on Wednesday, members of Sidmouth Tennis Club have much to think about as to the way forward.

An adverse weather forecast led to the cancellation of the middle session, but there would certainly seem to be demand from the young people of Sidmouth to put on further, similar programmes in the future.

For many years the club has not had a junior section and, should one be formed, its success will depend on the formation of a leadership team comprising existing members of the club, parents and a qualified coach.

Currently, adult membership stands at £90 per annum with junior fees at £15, with pro rata reductions on a quarterly basis throughout the financial year. Coaching is seen as an integral part of junior development with specific periods at a convenient time of day being set aside for the juniors to play.

In order to more accurately assess demand for junior tennis in Sidmouth and the surrounding area, the club invites Herald readers to register their interest by leaving relevant details at the club or by post to Sidmouth Tennis Club, Fortfield Terrace, Sidmouth, EX10 8NT.

The fact that this potential new venture is under active consideration is indicative of the significant progress that the tennis section has made this year. The feedback received from members who have joined in recent months has been very positive both with regard to playing the game itself but also the social events staged for the benefit of members.

Tennis is on the up in Sidmouth, the cricket teams are playing very well, being top of the league and cup finalists! After a game of tennis, a Devon cream tea, watching the cricket from the seats in front of the pavilion ... what could be better!
