At the club's annual general meeting, Chairman John Thatcher reflected on the last 12 months that began with an uncertain future at the Salston Manor, and ended with the acquisition of a much improved clubhouse on the site, a series of very successful events and increased membership.Ottery St Mary had progressed to Round Five in a national European qualification Cup for Clubsbefore travelling to Maidstone and losing to Tovil - a club boasting two internationals and many up-and-coming young players. The Otters won the 2008 Devon League title and, at their Charity Shield event, 260 was raised for Exeter Hospiscare. The club hosted an inter-county match between Devon and Cornwall at which the home side had prevailed, and at a Christmas fun day visiting teams from Devon and Cornwall clubs renewed friendships over mince pies and mulled wine in addition to a good day's petanque. The annual dinner was held in December at Ottery's Tumbling Weir Restaurant and much enjoyed by members.Working parties will be required in the better weather to continue improvements and groundwork maintenance. It was agreed that annual membership will remain at 20 - due to be paid by March 1. Club sessions will continue on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings will resume from March; the club will run East Devon open pairs competitions and, of course, the annual Charity Shield. l Coaching sessions are planned and it is hoped to build on last year's first Club Members' competition - all of which should help playing levels for those wishing to improve. Anyone interested in joining is welcome to go along for free trial sessions or contact the Secretary, Dave West, (01404) 812292.
