Ottery St Mary head into Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash with currently unbeaten and all-conquering Sidmouth 2nds in confident mood after dishing out a 10-wicket thrashing of hosts Feniton.

The win was set up after a thoroughly impressive all-round bowling and support fielding show followed by a perfect run chase during which openers Ollie West and Alex Clements continued their marvellous run of first innings partnerships.

When the Feniton skipper won the toss and advised opposite number Will Harrison that they would bat first, the Ottery skipper would have been forgiven for expecting his side to have to chase a decent score batting second.

However, Harrison, opening the bowling, got his side off to the perfect start when he found the edge of Chris May’s bat and Dan Flower took a comfortable catch at first slip.

Four overs later, Harrison claimed another victim with Mark Kingdon edging behind into the safe hands of glovesman Alex Clements.

Despite finding life hard on a difficult batting wicket, Graham Tucker and Mark Salter dug in and tried to rebuild the innings.

Tucker was first to depart, though, undone by a sharp turning delivery to be bowled for 16. Salter (26) followed, bowled round his legs by Jody Clements and, when Ben Allen was caught superbly down the leg side by Clements to give West his second, Feniton stood at 78-5.

Home captain Jon Pyle launched three huge sixes into the adjoining housing estate by way of a counter-attack, but he was next to go, falling to an outstanding one-handed diving catch by Ric Jackson. Another two wickets for Henry Mutter (3-8) and two for Jack Malden, and the home side were bundled out for just 119.

The reply started off slowly as testing opening overs from Jack Tucker and Jonathan French meant scoring was difficult for the Ottery openers.

However, West was soon in full stride especially on the short ball as he dispatched 13 boundaries in his 72 ball stay for 84 not out.

Clements was far more circumspect with his 31 off 53 with just five boundaries. A maximum point win for Ottery puts them second in the table after six games – the one third mark of the league season.

The Otters now face three tough fixtures, starting with the game against Sidmouth, before the halfway mark of the campaign is reached.
