Ottery St Mary served up a ‘super show’ in their midweek visit to Pinhoe, where they powered their way to an 11-2 success.

It’s the second time this season that the Otters have scored double figures – the other occasion being back in early September when Beer Albion Reserves were beaten 10-3 in a Bill Slee Cup tie.

The Wednesday night trip into Exeter to meet Pinhoe came after a Saturday 3-3 draw at Tedburn St Mary, a result that probably ended any lingering hopes of the Otters finishing in a top five berth in the Macron League Division Three table.

Manager Dave Fairweather was understandably disappointed with the result, particularly after his side led 1-0 at the break.

He said: “It was the on-going problem that we have of individual errors being punished by the opposition. We scored three goals, and that ought to be sufficient to bank the three points – the fact that it was not is very much down to a general lack of communication when defending. All too often we have situations where, if a team- mate takes responsibility and communicates, then an error might not happen. That is certainly something I want to see changed next season.”

Fit again, Jordan Wilkinson bagged a brace and leading scorer Corey Ringer was also on target.

At Pinhoe it was hit-man Ringer who took the individual scoring honours as he netted another four to take his season’s tally to 21.

Tom Bushby was also on target, netting twice and the other goals came from Adam Harris, Jordan Wilkinson, Chris Ambrose, skipper Curtis Winchombe and the first of the 11 was an own-goal with the ‘assist’ coming from Aiden Davey, who drilled a terrific ball into the area that was turned past his own glovesman by an unfortunate Pins defender. Ottery did trail to ‘yet another’ defensive error. But the own goal restored parity and by half-time the game was comfortably sealed with the Otters 4-1 to the good.

Fairweather said of the Pinhoe mauling: “We spoke after the game how refreshing it is to have come away feeling that everyone has played a big part in helping to put an opposition side ‘to the sword’.”

He continued: “We said at the break that here was a great chance to really inflict a heavy defeat on the home side and with it, take our goal difference into a positive figure, so, from that point of view, it was all very pleasing.”

The Otters are without a game tomorrow (Saturday), but they will be training at their Washbrook Meadows home to prepare for Monday afternoon’s league home game against Tedburn St Mary (3pm).

Fairweather says: “Monday presents a great chance for us to put the record straight after we only got a point from our recent game at Tedburn. With two cup semi-finals to come, I am looking for us to finish the league season as strongly as possible and we want to win all three of our remaining league games.”
