Corey Ringer scored twice to take his season’s tally to 17 as Ottery St Mary chalked up a fourth successive Macron League Division Three success, winning 5-1 at Newton St Cyres Reserves.

The Otters have certainly a hit a rich vein of form in terms of the league campaign. Since a midweek mauling at the hands of a strengthened University side in late September, the Otters have won 5-1 and 4-3 at Axmouth United and Tedburn St Mary respectively, thumped Clyst Valley 5-1 at Washbrook Meadow, and now have this latest 6-1 score line to savour from Saturday’s trip to Mid Devon.

Ringer has been leading the line with real authority and his 17 goals have come in just 13 starts this season so far!

The other goals at Newton St Cyres were scored by Curt Winchcombe, Jordan Wilkinson and Dan Welch.

A delighted Ottery boss Dave Fairweather said: “The lads are currently playing with a lot of confidence. It really is not rocket science!

“We have worked hard on the concept of making sure that you have as much of the ball as possible and, when the ball is lost, the cardinal rule is to get it back as soon as possible.”

He continued: “A big difference I have noted of late is that in previous seasons we might have edged a game by the odd goal, but now we seem to have a ruthless streak in us which demands that when we have an opponent by the scruff of the neck, we push home our domination and look to seal victory by a comfortable margin.”

The win lifts the Otters up to fourth in the Division Three table and they are now just seven points behind second placed University, who have played a game more.

Given that the next five league outings are all against sides below them in the table, there is every chance that the Otters can not only extend the current winning run, but also put themselves into a strong position to launch a serious promotion bid in the New Year.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the Otters go in search of a fifth straight league success when they visit basement side North Tawton who have lost 11 of their 12 league games so far this season. Indeed, in 13 league and cup games to date, North Tawton have shipped 66 goals!

Their lone success came in mid October when they beat Beer Albion Reserves 2-0.

Last Sunday’s scheduled league cup action for both the Ottery ladies and the Under-18s fell foul of the weather, but both will try again this Sunday.

The Otterettes are in home action with a Washbrook Meadow meeting with Halwill that kick-off at 2pm, while the Under-18s make the short trip across to Broadclyst where kick-off is also 2pm.
