Ottery bowler Gail Hawke wins coveted Devon county badge

Some of the best players in England, as well as Devon County, were there to hopefully gain their place in the squad.

The weather, across both days, was fine and the Ottery rinks got better on each occasion. The whole event was a big success and a real feather in the cap for Ottery, and we look forward to hosting some of the County’s home games in the future.

Congratulations must go to Gail Hawke, who was presented with her County Badge when she played for Devon against the Isle of Wight at Bridport last week.

Also, two more club members have gained the necessary points in the past week to achieve their club badge - congratulations to Sharon Kenny and John Pethick.

Back on the bowling rink, Ottery welcomed Chagford, against whom they lost by three rinks to one and by an overall score of 65 shots to 56.

The sole winning Ottery rink was Frank Jones, Gerry Beighton and skip Carol Bennett, who won 14-12.

In the men’s Over-60s League, Ottery A gained maximum points with a 35-24 success over Hemyock A. There was a 19-9 win for Steve Hall, Chris Hawke and skip John Pethick in this match and the B team matches that effort with an eight point home win over Crediton C. Tony Bushell, Andrew Evans and skip Ray Luscombe had the top rink score, winning 20-12.

This week saw the C team taking on the D team, and it was the former who came out on top, winning on both rinks and overall by 39 shots to 30.

The top rink was the one of Charles Jarvis, George Hutchinson and skip Brian Baker, 19-14.

The C team were also in action in a rearranged match at home to Broadclyst and they continued their fine start to the season with another maximum points win, bagging a 31-25 shot success.
