Ottery St Mary Bowling Club held its annual ‘Awards Dinner’ at the Tumbling Weir Hotel, writes Michael Smith.

The event was attended by some 80 members, friends and relatives - a magnificent turnout! As usual, the Tumbling Weir did a great job looking after the assembled guests with a fine dinner and excellent service from all their staff.

This was the culmination of another successful season for the club and, after having some good results in the external leagues and competitions in the summer, the winners and runners-up of the club’s internal competitions were there to receive their trophies.

Club captain Sharon Kenny and outgoing president Michael Potter announced the winners and runners-up, with Michael presenting the trophies to the winners.

The winner of the ladies 4-wood singles and the open 4-wood singles and also the new club champion was Shirley Fewtrell.

Sharon Kenny and Mike Smith received the Maurice Jennings mixed pairs trophy and they Sharon returned to collect the ladies’ 2-wood title.

Kevin Vernon and Terry House collected the men’s pair’s title and Kevin also won this years Umbrella trophy and Terry also the nominated mixed pairs with Mollie Parker.

The winner of the men’ 2-wood singles was Tony Luff, the men’s 4-wood title was won by Steve Hall and the open 3-wood title was picked up by John Pethick.

This years Otter Trophy went to the new club captain for 2016, Ray Luscombe and Carol Keating and Gail Hawke picked up the ladies’ pair’s title.

The winners of the mixed triples trophy were Mick Cissell, Margaret Bright and Mike Smith.

This was also club captain Sharon Kenny’s final duty of her two-year reign. She has worked tirelessly for the club over the past two years and the new club chairman, John Ward, offered Sharon the club’s thanks and appreciation for all her hard work during that time.
