After 13 weeks leading Division Eight in the men's Over-60s League, Ottery C were finally replaced at the top of the table by none other than Ottery D, writes Michael Smith.

That all came about after the C team lost at home to Uffculme C, beaten 35-32 despite an 18-14 win for the rink of George Hutchinson, Clive Russell and skip Brian Baker.

The D team took full advantage with a maximum points success at home to Hemyock B; the best rink was that of Maurice Flower, Clive Gibbs and skip John Ward, who won 26-8. The table now sees the D team leading by one point and they do have a game in hand and so, with just a few games to go, it promises to be a nailbiting finish to the end of the league campaign.

Also in the Over-60s League, the A team lost on both rinks away to Belmont A, beaten overall 38-25 and the B team didn’t fare much better, losing 34-29 at Bradninch A, where they did have a drawn rink with Bryan Salter, Andrew Evans and skip Tony Panzeri ending 14-all.

Ottery ladies enjoyed a good week with a win against St Thomas in the LNBTL by 32 shots to 29, the winning rink being that of Kate Wise, Jan Richardson and skip Sharon Kenny 32-29, and then a very creditable draw away to Crediton Yellow in the LOFTL 28-28. The winning Ottery rink was that of Carol Keating, Pam Baker and skip Sharon Kenny 17-11.

Ottery took six rinks to Topsham, and, in a closely contested match, lost by just three shots, 103-106.

The best Ottery rink was Pam Baker, Maurice Flower, Charlie Griffin and skip Ray Luscombe 19-13.

Then, to finish the week’s action, Ottery again lost by an agonising three shots when they travelled to Culm Vale in the East of Exe Mixed League; the best Ottery rink was that of Carol Keating, Ryan Seers, Chris Hawke and skip John Pethick, 23-13.

With just over six weeks of the season left to go, there is still plenty of time for new players to try their hand at bowls on a Friday club night from 6pm - coaching and equipment will be provided. For further information, please visit the website at or contact Mike Smith on 01404 811195.
