Ottery St Mary Petanque Club were 3-2 winners with a points difference of plus 16 when they hosted Isca in their latest match, writes Dave West.

The opening triples were shared, with Dave West, Derek Hansen and Paul Puddicombe 13-8 winners, but John and Rose Thatcher , together with Sue Smith, were edged out 13-11.

In the doubles, Dave West paired up with Derek Hansen for a nip-and-tuck meeting them lead three times and pegged back level three times before they took control to run out handsome 13-3 winners.

John and Rose Thatcher were also 13-3 winners, but the pairing of Sue Smith and Paul Puddicombe, went down 13-6.

The final outcome of a plus 16 points difference may yet prove crucial I terms of the final placings this season.

Isca currently occupy third spot having completed all their matches. The final games are being played on September 4 when Ottery and U3A – who share top spot with seven wins each, are both in action.

On the first Sunday in September U3A meet North Devon rivals Pig on the Hill while the Otters travel to Plymouth.
