With wins in their final two matches of the season, Ottery St Mary could finish their Peninsula League season mid-table, writes Lee Glanville.

They play basement side Axminster Town on Good Friday and end their campaign against Totnes and Dartington next Wednesday. Six points from those games will leave the side in a most respectable position, after a season which began with another round of managerial merry-go-round.

Current boss, Dane Bunney, has done better than anyone could have wished for, and performances will only improve next season, if the committee back him to stay in charge, as the ambitious manager will start with a side he has built himself.

Last Saturday, Ottery beat Teignmouth - who are battling to finish second in the league - 3-2.

“We just went out and played well. We kept taking the lead, but Teignmouth kept pegging us back,” said Bunney.

“I felt my lads were harshly done by, when a penalty was given against them just before half time, but I told them at the break that Teignmouth were there for the taking.”

Ottery were awarded a penalty themselves five minutes into the second half and went on to maintain the lead and harvest all three points.

Brady Cole, who has been a revelation late season, scoring eight goals in the last seven games, got two of the goals, Chris Ibbeson got the third.

“In this league, if you are playing Teignmouth, or a team below you, there isn’t much difference in standard of play,” Bunney said. “Six points from our last two games will bump us right up the table.”

It looks as if Budleigh are in the driving seat for league second spot now as they earned a point from their match with Galmpton. Teignmouth, who never looked likely to score more, badly needed to win against Ottery St Mary.
