Ottery St Mary ladies were busy last week in their Over-50s Triples League campaign, writes Michael Smith.

The team’s three matches began with a home meeting with Belmont that saw the rinks shared, with Ottery emerging as the 42-33 winners.

Next up a trip to Starcorss where, with a loss on one rink and a draw on the other, it was the home side who came out on top to the tune of a 34-24 score line.

The final fixture of the week was another away fixture to Exonia, where the home side proved too strong winning 52-25.

It was also a poor week for the Ottery men’s Over-60s triples teams, with all three teams losing on both rinks, the A team to Seaton A, the B team to North Tawton C and the C team to St Thomas C.

In friendly matches the meeting with Chard saw the rink success shared, but with Ottery claiming match honours at 70-62.

The best Ottery rink was the one of Fiona Griggs, Dave Rose and skip Tony Luff, who were 24-10 winners.

An away game to Seaton saw Ottery losing on both rinks.

The week ended on a high though with the Ottery quartet of Gail and Chris Hawke, Joan Saunders and skip Eric Saunders winning the ‘Jimmy Wyatt Trophy’ at Chardstock with a final shot difference of 22.

It was a clear success for the runners-up in the competition finished five shots behind on 17!

A fine victory indeed and congratulations to the team for bringing back to the club out first silverware of the season.

To cap a relatively disappointing week result wise, Ottery continue their good run in the Two Counties competition, with a very close win at home to Tiverton Borough 77-76 !

The best performing rink was the one of Sharon Kenny, Tony Luff, Shirley Fewtrell and skip John Pethick who were 26-14 winners.

Friday club nights continue throughout the summer, and with the good weather continuing, it’s a great time for new players to try their hand at bowls , just turn up from 6pm.

All that is needed is to attend with flat shoes or trainers and there’s both free coaching and equipment provided.
