THE future in rowing of Ottery St Mary oarsman Marcus Bowyer got a whole lot brighter this week with news that he has been awarded a big cash injection to help with his training costs.
The 17-year old Kings School student is one of just 262 up-and-coming athletes from across England and Wales to receive �1,000 from the Lloyds TSB Local heroes initiative.
The funds are to help the athletes both train and compete and the talented Bowyer is very pleased with the news.
He said: I am targeting the singles at the World Junior Championships which take pace at the end of the year. Last year I was fourth in the quad and hopefully I can go one better this time round and win a medal.”
Meanwhile Bowyer has another target very clearly in mind: “ With the rich tradition that Great Britain has in the sport I would love to go to the Olympics and so the Rio Olympics of 2016 is obviously going to be at the right time for me. My role model simply has to be Steve Redgrave. His five gold medals say everything about his commitment to the sport and I would be so happy just to win one such medal”
