Ottery St Mary took another positive step forward in their preparations for the South-West Peninsula League season after defeating Budleigh Salterton 2-0 in midweek.
The Monty Perry Invitation Cup is a fine tribute from Ottery to Monty, a true club legend, who sadly passed away in January. Monty started as an Ottery player way back in 1953 and carried out virtually every task possible at the club.
After a tight opening half-hour at Washbrook Meadows, Ottery grabbed the lead when Luka Nickles released Marcus Fanson and he lashed an emphatic finish into the corner of the net.
The same duo combined for a decisive second on the stroke of half-time, with Nickles fouled in the area and Fanson calmly slotted home the penalty for a 2-0 Ottery win.
The Otters will kick-off their campaign at a new level with a mouthwatering local derby at home to Sidmouth Town next weekend (August 7) and then the games will come thick and fast.
A midweek trip to Brixham is followed by a home meeting with Okehampton Argyle and then a journey to Elburton Villa in a packed early-season schedule.
Playing at a higher level will bring a greater profile to the club and new commercial opportunities are developing at Washbrook Meadows all the time, with potential partners and sponsors urged to contact the club through social media or to call the commercial team on 07940 531712.
There has also been some terrific news for the junior side of the club, as Ottery St Mary Under-11 coach Sean Guyan has become the first Ottery coach to take and pass the new FA introduction to coaching course.
As we head through the summer, all levels at Ottery are gearing up for what will hopefully be a full season of football and new players are always welcome to join.
The Otters have squad through the age groups from Under-7s right to the senior teams, both male and female. Anyone interested in joining the club should contact info@otterystmaryafc.co.uk or visit their vibrant social media pages for more information.
