Ottery St Mary missed out on promotion from Fresha Division Five after being thumped 6-0 away at rivals Kenitsbeare in a winner-takes-all game on Wednesday night.

Two own goals and a red card compounded the Otters’ misery.

Ottery had set up the must-win encounter by beating Halwill 2nds 3-2 away on Saturday – Jordan Rogers, Tom Collins and Sean Ford with the goals. Jake Allen was man-of-the-match.

Promotion was not meant to be on Wednesday, however, as Kentisbeare resoundingly sealed their Division Four place at Ottery’s expense.

“The scoreline didn’t reflect the majority of the game,” said Otters boss Dave Fairweather.

“We conceded two goals from set pieces in the first 20 minutes, one being a fluke own goal, after which we took control of the game and were unlucky not to have scored.”

The Otters, missing five ‘key’ players, according to Fairweather, started the second half well, only to be reduced to 10 men after an hour.

Kentisbeare scored four times in the last 15 minutes – including another own goal.

The silver lining for Ottery could be Golesworthy Cup glory.

They take on Awliscombe at Washbrook Meadows tonight (Friday) in the semi-final. Kick-off 7pm.
