The opening weekend of the South-West Peninsula League season belonged to North Devon conquerors, roaring Tigers and some delighted Fishermen.

Starting with those fab Fishermen of Brixham, the Peninsula outfit faced a daunting trip to Southern League side Tavistock and came home from Langsford Park with a stunning 3-2 triumph.

Torridgeside topped the Peninsula East division after the opening weekend and they performed superbly to win 4-0 at a dangerous Elmore. Nick Glover opened the scoring on the half-hour and Shaun Copp scored a crucial second immediately after half-time. Torridgeside then turned on the style with further goals from Copp and Marc Bettiss.

The Tigers of Axminster Town were the other big winners and a tough day for Torrington as they went down to a 5-2 defeat in the East Devon sunshine. Holsworthy worked very hard before going down to a 1-0 loss at Dartmouth.

Zac Ryder scored a consolation for Cullompton Rangers as they went down 3-1 at home to Bovey Tracey and there was a great start to life at a new level for Okehampton Argyle, who beat Elburton Villa 1-0. Bridport began their Peninsula experience at Ivybridge Town but lost 1-0 on the day.

The Friday night fixtures saw league newcomers Teignmouth win 3-2 at Plymouth Marjon and goals from Sam Stapleton and James Mudge scored the goals for Crediton United in an entertaining 2-2 draw at home to Newton Abbot Spurs.

The relentless fixture schedule gets into full swing in midweek and Elmore will be desperate to find some form in the local derby at Crediton. Torridgeside welcome Okehampton Argyle in a bid to extend their great start and Honiton Town begin their season at Bridport.

Five more games are scheduled for Wednesday evening and a big game for Cullompton at home to Axminster and the FA Cup heroes of Brixham take on Bovey. Holsworthy host Marjon, Elburton travel to Torrington and Ivybridge visit Dartmouth.

If the first weekend of results are any guide, the big game this Saturday will be at Erme Valley, where Torridgeside are the visitors to Ivybridge.
