Glorious weather has arrived and inspired club bowlers with some excellent playing conditions. First match was a nine rinker against Cheltenham who proved very strong, winning overall by 189- 143, writes Ron Cook.

Sidmouth matched their winning rinks, four each and one draw. Best rinks for Sidmouth were Elaine Reed, Brian Godbeer and Mike Borst 15-11 after conceding 25 per cent of their shots, having been reduced to a triple. Betty Farmer, Josephine Harrison, Bert Hague and Alan Matthews 21-17; Marian Watson, Jackie Godbeer, Bob Daniels and John Mason 17-17; Ivan Robins, Bill Knight, Mary Smith and Norman Brimson 19-18; Marian Watson, Doreen Pound, Jim Wrench and Brian Smith 23-22.

The next visitors were Heavitree who brought three mixed rinks and a triple which Sidmouth matched as one of our players was unwell and could not play. There was some lively bowling from both sides with Heavitree winning overall by 65-57. Best rink for Sidmouth was Ralph Brooks, Jackie Godbeer, Jean Green and Gordon Blood skipping his first game winning 24-10. Well done Gordon and his team. Rita Daw, Zena Johnson, Alex Bent and Ron Cook were 16-10 up after 13 ends but the usual effect of a tea break set in and they fell back to draw 19-19.

On Friday, the men held their annual Jubilee Cup inviting local teams to compete for the trophy. Six visiting teams played from Madeira, Budleigh Salterton, Seaton, Feniton, Honiton and Belmont. Lyme Regis should have been the seventh but could not provide a team on the day. Madeira finished with the best gross score of plus 34, closely followed by a Sidmouth team with plus 22 having played only six matches. Thanks must go to the ladies for providing an excellent tea at the interval contributing to a most enjoyable day. The final match was a friendly against Chudleigh who have had 21 cancelled matches and found their greens flooded on seven occasions since June 1! Each team had two winning rinks with Sidmouth taking the overall honours with a score of 71-64. Best rinks for Sidmouth were Ivan Robins, Sylvia Cook, Cliff Hewett and skip Ron Cook 22-10; John Chew, Dennis Moore, Jenny Fricker and skip Jane Painter 19-16.
