Matthew Perry, 20, a builder from Sidmouth, has won through to the British Drug Free Powerlifting Association finals at his first attempt. Matthew, who trains at Bob's Gym in Holmdale and works for Max Hansford, had never entered a competition before but his girlfriend, Joanna Knight, spotted a BDFPA event in Birmingham which she thought it would be fun for him to enter. To their amazement he won his junior age category and went on to qualify for the British finals which will be held in April in Coventry. Matthew, who used to play rugby for Sidmouth, now has to watch his diet to make the weight category for the British finals. As Joanna has been 'pub sitting' the Golden Lion all week for her aunt and uncle, his diet this week has consisted of plenty of steak - but no creamy sauces! Jo said: "We really didn't know what to expect. It is such a big achievement. We knew he was strong - everyone is always asking for his help when they need a bit of power - but it was amazing that he won.
