Regardless of a course par there is one score that many top amateurs and pros strive for and that is to shoot a 59. This is exactly the score that the in-form James Pickard shot in the Monday Stableford, which gave him a huge 44 points playing off 1 hcp and he is now only .3 of a shot from being scratch !The Veterans Cup, being played on the same day, meant the entries were unusually low but still 27 players went out and the scoring was incredibly good. Eleven players beat par and 8 of these were in the 40+ bracket. Nigel Winchester would have increased his birdie count helped by three twos!l On Sunday the B-Team won at home against East Devon Golf Club, 6-0, especially pleasing as the away match was cancelled, but hopefully will be rearranged. Results: Colin Macklin and Bob Welsman won 2 up , Nick (two umbrellas) Bater and Ian Bright won 5/3, Roger Trivett and Chris Denning won 4/3, Phil Long and John Barnard won 4/2, Kym White and Phil Beer won 7/5, Hugh Dorliac and Tony Bickle won 6/5. Thanks to sponsors Acanthus Press, Stuart Collings, The Radway Inn and The Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic, for the nearest the pin prizes, on hole 7 won by Ian Bright and on hole 12, won by Roger Trivett. After five gruelling matches the Golf club have won the Sidmouth Pub League cricket. The hockey club won the toss and chose to bat first, a decision that was mainly based on the fact that half the team were not present at the time. A couple of early wickets gave the golf club hope, but a strong middle order gave the hockey club a total of 208. This was the highest total the golf club had faced and the batting order was re jigged and opening were John Dunn and Anthony Griffiths.Griff obviously felt that Dunnie was not up to the task and first ball had Dunnie run out. A collapse ensued and with five overs remaining the golf club still needed 100 to win. A major loss was Nick Gingell who usually performs well with the bat but did not score, so who would save the golf club? Who could we rely on to bring us home? Certainly not Mark Thomas (played 5, batted 5 times, scored.......5!).Lewis Perry was the hero for us he bravely faced their top bowlers smashing sixes, fours, ones, wides etc. Griff, having already reached 30 and under the rules having to retire, was given the opportunity to come back in as we had no other wickets available. Griff smashed six sixes on the trot and with the partnership standing up to all the hockey club could throw at them, the golf club somehow won with two balls to spare. My Man of the Match award went to Lewis Perry who took two wickets and scoring 57 including the winning six.The shield will be on display in the trophy cabinet just in front of the Challenge Cup!LADIES' GOLF - Medal 6 on Wednesday saw 32 ladies out on the course aiming to win the DCLGA Medal, club competition, Gertie Skinner qualifier, Eclectic and putting competitions - phew!Weather conditions were relatively calm, occasional strong breezes but no threatening rain. That said, the greens seemed to quicken up as the day progressed. On the whole the course was in very good condition, thanks again to the Greens' staff with the ball not running too far to the out of bounds.CSS for the day was 70. There were three birdies on the 10th and the seventh proved the most difficult hole, with an average of 3.09 over par - you could say that the 'wheels came off' for some competitors; certainly did in a big way for me, but thanks to my partner, Ann Desmoulins, she got the wheel back onto my trolley on the 13th!Division 1 winner was Margaret Thompson with nett 73. Angela Coles won Division 2 with nett 71 and Marian Thomas won Division 3 on count-back with a nett 70. Marian was the overall winner on the day and has cut her handicap to 26. She has qualified for the Gertie Skinner. There's a 2s roll-over, and the putting competition was won by Margot Beauchamp on 29 putts..
