The fortnight of centenary celebrations, which has been enjoyed by everyone, has ended and all the photos will provide a lovely record for all the future members to look back on, writes Cliff Hewett. With a very full fixtures list still to fulfil, the men have plenty of bowling. This week saw further rounds of club competitions being played, and Sidmouth also hosted two touring sides.Three men's and two ladies' rinks from South Oxford visited and, once again, Sidmouth were very kind to our visitors. They went away very happy having won 64-49 overall on the three men's rinks: J Doyle, D Mountford, K Hutton, P Clements (skip) 7-24; R Denning, P Mison, B Turner, B Boddy (skip) 22-18; J Davies, D Holland, J Wall, T Wilkins (skip) 20-22. On the ladies' rinks Sidmouth won on both, 36-32 - well done to the ladies. Their captain presented Sidmouth with a large iced cake for the centenary, and it was enjoyed by everyone at the end of the match - a very kind gesture from them and much appreciated. On Friday Sidmouth entertained the Ad Finem touring side for five men's rinks and three ladies. This is an association made up of members from all different clubs from the West Middlesex area. The men won 95-85: R Tallent, F Adlam, M Borst, M Smith (skip) 16-21, D Ware, R Graham, C Bryant, T Wilkins (skip) 16-18; B Smith, B Barber, B Hague, R Stubbs (skip) 22-12; D Bridgman, M Savage, B Mortimer, N Brimson (skip) 19-22; C Rourke, J Greenaway, B Daniels, C Hewett (skip) 22-12. The Ladies also won 61-43 (see Dreda Taylor's report).I was captain for the day, having originally bowled in West Middlesex, and was pleased to meet up with many bowling friends and catch up on all the news.Due to inclement weather conditions the friendly match against St Thomas was cancelled. With much brighter conditions on Sunday, the men played away at Ottery St Mary, winning 111-85, in an enjoyable and friendly match. Scores: M Watson, P Hannant, C Rourke, D Mountford (skip) 23-8; P Mison, P Wrench, J Doyle, A Capon (skip) 24-10; C Hunt, E Saunders, J Mountford, B Hague (skip) 11-16; D Bridgman, P Hague, M Watson, S Burnand (skip) 16-18; S Mison, J Wrench, M King, B Mortimer (skip) 22-19; M Hunt, P Chew, T Lee, S Graham (skip) 15-17. The County Trophy against Budleigh Salterton was won on both rinks at home and lost away on both rinks - won overall 80-74.l The open day on Sunday was a great success with 19 new people showing an interest in the game of bowls. Training sessions will be organised for all of those who wish to learn more.
