Thanks to the sterling work of groundsman Colin Whitehall, the croquet lawns were in magnificent condition as play opened for the new season, writes Colin Walls.

Roger Hendy opened proceedings with an informative talk on subtleties of the game. Committee members Muriel Philpott and Peter Nelson hit in with a game of Association Croquet; and Gabby Macadam, David Earwood, Ian Friedlander and Howard Quarrell enjoyed a game of Golf Croquet. The weather was stunning and many members turned out to watch and soak up the rays, and to partake of the excellent lunch that followed.

The keen players are already booking lawns to get in practice for the first tournament: the Charity One-Ball in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign, on April 12.
