Sidmouth entertained the Devon indoor president Trevor Burbidge and his representative teams for a three rink men's match. At present there are 16 indoor clubs and the president, in his year of office, attempts to visit each at least once. I suppose it is something like an Elizabethan royal progress but, rather than stay six months, they come for the afternoon, beat you at bowls and then stay for tea. This visit was no exception. The president brought three rinks of excellent bowlers who won on all rinks with more or less the same margin on each of about six shots. None the less, everyone enjoyed this friendly visit and we hope Trevor left with pleasant memories: K Bridgman, B Smith, J Wall, P Clements (skip) 14-20; B Hague, K Hutton, J Mason, N Brimson (skip) 14-21; W Rogers, D Lever, T Wilkins, W Boddy (skip) 14-21.I am sure that all the bowlers who took part in games this past week, enjoyed themselves as always, but the results have been something of a disaster. I can only say, if you enjoy weepies, carry on reading, otherwise, stop here.Sidmouth played Torquay United on the 15th at home in a three rink mixed match (this is a new fixture this year I believe) losing 41-77 overall: J Quinn, J Lewis, A Constable, P Clements (skip) 10-33; D Cox, T Constable, S Cook, J White (skip) 13-24; B Farmer, P Wrench, D Lever, R Cook (skip) 18-20.The men faired no better on the 16th against Honiton at home. I have not managed to locate the cards for this match so I cannot give the actual scores although I know that we lost heavily. Perhaps the skips ate the evidence!Sidmouth played both home and away against Kingsley on the 15th. At home in the full rink, P Mison, T Pritchard, N Brimson, P Wilson (skip) lost 17-27. In the singles, W Rogers went down 19-21 but the pairs team of K Bridgman and C Bryant won 20-15. Away, R Talent, J Mason, J Wall (skip) in the triples, lost 9-26 and in the singles T Brown lost 6-21.Just a thought to finish with, it has been said that the good bowlers know where the jack is, whereas the great bowler knows where the jack is going to be.
