By Sarah ClokeSidmouth Ladies 1st XI 2, Plymouth Marjons 0Having had an encouraging build-up to the new season in the friendly fixtures, there was an air of optimism in the Sidmouth side as league fixtures began.Following a vigorous warm-up, slightly extended due to the late arrival of the misplaced second umpire, Sidmouth started well, dominating the opening phase of the game. After a period of sustained pressure and a well-worked short corner routine, Sidmouth took the lead when Anna Cloke slotted the ball past the stranded keeper. Before long Taryn Beuthin extended the advantage by capitalising on a strong build up involving many of the Sidmouth players. Marjons came back strongly in the second half and Sidmouth relied on some timely tackles by experienced players Janet Jones and Karen Cann to prevent the students from converting their attacks. Sidmouth keeper Hayley Delasalle had an outstanding game in goal. She made full use of her new goalie kit with some close reflex saves and some brave sprints to the edge of the circle to frustrate the advancing Marjons' forwards, and maintain the home side's clean sheet.l This weekend Sidmouth take on the Pirates of Penzance at the Sidmouth College synthetic turf pitch at 3pm.
