Last Saturday (August 2), Ottery St Mary hosted the tenth staging of the Redfern Trophy, writes Michael Smith.
This competition involves six invited teams and six teams from Ottery St Mary playing a round-robin format over 24 ends.
In a very close contest the team of Terri Ward, Gerry Beighton, Margaret Bright and skip John Ward from Ottery finished runners up with a plus 20 shot difference, but the winners, by one shot, were Lyme Regis with a plus 21 shot difference.
Tim Wright of Redferns Estate Agents, who have very kindly sponsored the event for 10 years, presented the trophy to the winning team, and in appreciation of Tim’s and Redferns support for the past decade, club captain Sharon Kenny presented Tim with a bottle of wine and a bouquet of flowers for Tim’s wife, who unfortunately was not able to attend this year.
Elsewhere, the Ottery St Mary men’s Over-60s teams all suffered defeats in their latest Exeter and District Triples League matches.
The a team went down at Culm Vale C, the B side lost to Pinces B and the C team were beaten by Pinces D.
Two friendly fixtures resulted in wins away to Budleigh and at home to Seaton, the best rink being that of Moira Griffin, Brian Light, Margaret Bright and skip Terry House (26-14).
The ladies had mixed fortunes, losing away to Heavitree in the NBTL, but gaining a victory at home to Chagford in the Ladies’ Over-50s Triples League.
The season is rapidly drawing to a close, but the club continues to welcome any prospective new members to come and try their hand on Friday evenings from 6pm.
Prospective players need to wear flat shoes or trainers and all coaching and equipment will be provided.
