The Veterans Cup was contested on Monday and it became yet another day to remember for club captain John Rockey, writes George Carr.

Following hard on his very successful Captain’s Day the previous weekend, Rockey kept a full field of determined vets (not to be confused with animal doctors) at bay to win this one - no mean achievement.

He contrived (in golfing parlance) to ‘shoot his age’; dropping only six of his 11 shots with birdies on the sixth and 18th’, to post his gross score of 70, this, less his 11 handicap gave him a winning score of 59 - seven better than par - leaving him comfortably clear of the nearest challenger Brian Margison whose commendable net 62 won him second place.

Bob Skelley dropped only 19 of his unbelievably high handicap of 27 to gain third spot; well done Bob; you’ll have to manage with 24 shots in future.

Well done, also, John Rockey, on a captain’s performance to win this highly prized trophy.
