Fixtures against Crediton for this squad have tended to be closely-fought contests with Crediton probably having a slight edge over the years.
This match was no exception, however, it was Sidmouth's turn to take the honours, but not without a spirited defence from the home side.
Sidmouth started strongly and dominated the first five minutes with strong play from the forwards, leading to a penalty on the Crediton 22 metre line.
Ben Pratt had no hesitation kicking for goal and squeezed the ball home for three points from the tightest of angles.
Totally against the run of play, as Crediton scored a simple try, quickly followed by another, taking them into half time with a significant points' advantage.
They further increased their lead after the break from a penalty. It was at this point that Sidmouth doubled their efforts and set siege to the Crediton try line. It was only a matter of time before Gareth Pearson used his strength to drive over the line for a try.
Having found this weakness in the Crediton defence, a similar move quickly followed, giving just reward when Pearson again popped the ball down for a try. This was comfortably converted by James Powell, giving Sidmouth back a lead which they comfortably defended until the final whistle.
It was testament to the passion displayed in this game that, when the whistle blew, the whole Sidmouth squad leapt as one into the air to celebrate their victory. Simultaneously, the Crediton squad collectively collapsed and lay on the ground, exhausted by their efforts. A thoroughly entertaining match and a well-deserved victory for the Colts.
