By John ShaylerSidmouth RFC U14s 7, Devonport Services U14s 14These two sides last met in the U13 Devon Cup final last season when Sid came out on top. Territorially, the visitors had best of the first quarter. Their big pack cleaned up in the line-outs and set up several attacks, but Sid more than held their own in scrums and rucks. Outstanding defence thwarted several assaults on the Sid try-line - flanker Brynnley Henrickson showed the way with his first up tackling and second-row Mike Bond put in huge tackles on the big guys at close quarters. In his own 22, no8 Gavin Pearson seized on a loose ball and drove 20m at pace to provide a great platform for the Sid pack to ruck over. Slick hands from the backs whipped the ball out wide and wing Alex Dunn was untouchable in taking a clinical score under the posts, which he then converted. From ample possession, Devonport moved the ball about well. Their patience paid off just before half-time when the centre crashed over for a converted try. It was a similar picture in the second half and some handling mistakes kept Sid on the back foot. After several phases Devonport broke through for their second converted try to seal the win. Sid were impressive in their commitment and approach to the game and will no doubt learn from it.
