Archant

A showery afternoon at Sidford awaited the visitors after the long drive from Okehampton but the sun soon shone and spirits were lifted for this highly entertaining match.

Sidmouth were in total control for the first 10 minutes and were rewarded with a try from Tony Martin after powerful driving by the forwards. Despite continuing to dominate the play for the rest of the first half, Sidmouth were unable to add to the score. Set moves from the backs were working well, clearly showing how much has been achieved in midweek training.

The second half saw a huge change in play by the visitors who stepped up their game and suddenly looked like the side most likely to win. The Sidmouth pack lost momentum for a moment and conceded a try. Luckily for Sidmouth it was not converted.

Okehampton opted to kick for goal when awarded a penalty soon after which they duly converted leaving them leading by a single point. The match continued for what seemed an eternity whilst Okehampton dug their heels in, knowing that they could steal victory with a concerted effort.

Sidmouth were frustrated at having been ahead and then trailing by just one point to a side that matched them at every move.

With just 10 minutes to play, the ball fell to Charlie Davies playing outside centre. Aided by some excellent teamwork from several including Ashley Caldwell and Ollie Shaw, Davies left two other Okehampton backs well beaten for pace, and scored. The try was easily converted by Hugo Gosden and Sidmouth held on for a close but well deserved victory.
