Sidmouth Colts 29, Exeter Chiefs Colts 26.
The Sidmouth Colts edged-out Exeter Chiefs in an open and entertaining game on the new Prettejohn Field.
The key moment was an outstanding tackle by Luke Wells-Burr on the Exeter number-eight who had crossed the try line and was running the ball under the posts. Wells-Burr held him up and then turned him to save Sidmouth going 19-5 down and handing a huge initiative to the visitors!
Sidmouth had taken an early lead through Charlie Cotton who rounded off some well executed midfield passing by Cavin, Powell and West. Exeter hit back with two tries and looked on top in the forwards where Sidmouth struggled in the set piece. With huge potential in the squad the prospect of an improved line-out and scrum will bring real rewards for the Colts.
A try by Wells-Burr, two from Jack Faulkner and one more from Charlie Cotton, all of which came from excellent breaks and powerful running, took Sidmouth into a 22-12 lead which became 29-19 as the sides traded scores. However, poor execution and poor control at two kick-offs piled pressure on Sidmouth and a late Exeter score made for a tense last three minutes when Exeter had the initiative but ran out of time to take the lead.
Of the new Colts Harry Rumens, Ed Thomas and Astley-Jones are all improving and gaining confidence. Kyle Baker brings valuable physicality to the game and Cavin’s work rate and commitment to defence and tackling set a great example.
Dan Powell had an excellent half at stand-off and Rabbi Hansford has great strength in the tackle and brings pace to the game.
With Lewis Horne back in the fold and Sam Smith in good form, the back row with Carlisle, Pares and Kearns to come back, is looking an exciting prospect.
This weekend the colts are on the road for their first away fixture at Exeter Saracens.
