Sidmouth Quins win well against Torquay 2nds

Sidmouth Quins were 31-20 winners when they hosted Torquay 2nds.

Conditions proved to be perfect for open flowing rugby and both sides contributed to make it a watchable even encounter. The Quins, being a couple of players light were grateful to be joined by Ben West, now with Withycombe, and the three other stalwarts after their game went down, hopefully these clubs link-ups will ensure more games go can go ahead.

An early injury to full back Mark Bishop resulted in a temporary backline reshuffle which the visitors capitalised on keeping the Quins under the cosh for the first period of play, finally getting their first try wide out on 15 minutes.

The Quins started to use the slope and wind to good advantage keeping Torquay penned in their own half, a Johnny Hamill kick to the corner was chased down by wing Ben West who disrupted the fullbacks attempted clearance, Johnny Hamill was on hand to pick up the loose ball and go over, the try was unconverted.

The Quins enjoyed some good first phase ball, props Yann Tippet and Veteran Daren Sainsbury providing a solid platform, a five-metre scrum resulted in a quickly taken penalty, hooker Neil Barratt drove over, Will Dunford adding the extras.

Will Dunford created the next try with a long miss pass on halfway creating the space for Ben West to race away to the score a converted try in the corner and see Quins to a 19-7 half-time lead.

Torquay started the second half using the same tactics as the Quins had, keeping the ball deep in the Sidmouth half. Sustained pressure from the visitors saw them gain the upper hand, with two unconverted tries and a penalty to give them a single point advantage at 20-19.

The Quins defended well but were in need of a get out jail card, which came courtesy of a Tom Robbins interception 40 metres out and to score under the posts, Will Dunford again converting.

This gave the game a nail biting last 10 minutes, but Ben Pratt settled the nerves with a delicate chip ahead and gather to score ensuring the victory.
