The Sidmouth RFC Annual Charity Sevens provided the final action of the season at the Blackmore Field on Bank Holiday Sunday, writes Terry O'Brien.

A good crowd enjoyed the spring sunshine, barbeques and entertaining rugby from nine teams.

The teams were divided into three groups of three for the qualifying stage. The group winners were TC Top Cats made up of Sidmouth exiles, Inky’s Island Sharks from Honiton and TOB Barbarians composed of Colts past and present.

They were joined in the cup semi-finals by the best performing runners up EURFC/Hornets, mainly second team players and guests. Inky’s Land Sharks, having amassed 116 points in their two matches, were the early

favourites.

Contesting the Shield were The Colts, Old Honitonians, old boys of Allhallows School, club veterans S Club 7 and MKAS the Bagwell Years. The one team to be eliminated was Risca Golden Oldies from Wales.

The Cup semi-finals were both closely contested, with TC Top Cats beating Inky’s Land Sharks 19-12 and EURFC/Hornets prevailing over TOB Barbarians 19-10.

Meanwhile, The Colts and MKAS comfortably progressed to the Shield final, which the Colts won 33-17.

The Plate final provided the closest match of the day with TOB Barbarians beating Inky’s Land Sharks 31-26 after extra time.

The Cup final saw TC Top Cats hitting top form to win 31-10.

The trophies were presented by Mike Ford of sponsors Fords of Sidmouth. More than £600 was raised in aid of Devon Freewheelers.
