Sidmouth Under12s took part in the Land Rover Cup meeting last weekend.

This is an annual festival of rugby that sees some of the best junior teams from across the region taking part.

Sidmouth went into the competition with a squad of 19 and they played seven matches.

The opening pool game saw them meet local rivals Topsham as well as Redruth and Saltash. It was Saltash they met first and Sidmouth emerged as 5-1 winners.

The second game saw them go up against a powerful Topsham side that led 1-0 at the break. In the second half the Sidmouth youngsters scored twice to lead 2-1. In the final minute the fleet-footed Topsham winger was bearing down on the try line looking set to bag his second try when the Sidmouth winger matched him for pace and dragged him down just before the line and the final whistle blew seconds later!

The final group game was against a Redruth side that had previously seen off Topsham 3-0!

However, it was the pace from the Sidmouth backs that proved decisive as they inspired their team to a 2-1 success.

It all meant Sidmouth winning their pool and moving on to take on old rivals Newton Abbot, who just edged the contest and indeed, Newton Abbot went on to win the whole competition.

A Sidmouth coach said: “The boys played with great skill and passion on what was such a cold day and were unlucky in the finals against Newton Abbot, but they can all hold their heads high for their superb collective efforts.”
