Sidmouth RFC U10 40, Tiverton 10
First home match of the season was against a tough Tiverton team, who albeit being a much smaller squad than Sidmouth, were a well-drilled and practiced outfit.
Being a home match and beautiful sunny day, there was a big crowd of parents and grandparents willing the boys on.
Tiverton elected to have uncontested scrums and line-outs.
The first quarter saw good passing by the young Sids, who were moving the ball well.
With a line out five yards from the Tiverton line, the ball went down the line to James Nichols who went over for a try. The boys were passing well and Thomas Mead went over for the second scrum. From a five yard scrum Tiverton passed the ball out well to their quick winger who scored.
The second quarter started well with some running from Will, who just knocked on as he went over. After a Sidmouth forward pass Tiverton won the scrum and ran the ball down their line eventually getting a touch down, 15-10.
Having won the scrum the Charlie McCaig made a lovely pass to Joe who went over for a score, 20-10. After the restart Will got another, 25-10Tiverton started the third phase with some good running, but to no avail. Sidmouth moved the ball up and down beautifully and Matt scored, followed by Joe for a 35-10 lead.James scored late on.
Having a large squad makes the coaches‘ life easy and difficult: easy as there are always fresh pairs of legs; difficult because there are many boys that need to have a run out. But one aspect that helped this match was having the coach on the touchline organising the boys as opposed to refereeing. Thanks to all the coaches for their inspiring work.
