SIDMOUTH Cricket Club's reign as Devon Indoor Six-a-Side champions lasted just one year after they were sent packing by Mayfair Sapphires in their home sports hall in Plymouth on Sunday. The Sapphires, an amalgam of Plymstock and Roborough players, turned in a devastating fielding performance to dismiss Sidmouth for 60 in a semi-final clash.Sidmouth were soon on the back foot when prolific opener Anthony Griffiths's cut shot was smartly held at point by Dominic Wood. Then Graham Munday was run out cheaply when a drive by Matt Cooke was deflected on to the stumps by the bowler's outstretched foot.Any hopes of a recovery were dashed when Wood eclipsed his earlier catch by holding a full-blooded Cooke drive one-handed at full stretch. As Sidmouth strove to put runs on the board, they took risks with their running and the Sapphires responded with accurate throws to see Scott Barlow, Miles Dalton and Mark Jasper perish cheaply.Embarrassingly for Sidmouth the top scorer was extras, with 19. Top scorer with the bat was Dalton with 12, Cooke and Jasper both adding 10.Sidmouth helped the Sapphires on their way to a four-wicket victory by conceding 21 extras. A direct hit run-out by Munday and a clean bowled wicket for Dalton temporarily raised Sidmouth spirits, but the Sapphires got home with more than three overs to spare. In the final they defeated Bovey Tracey, who did not have a semi-final to negotiate after Heathcoat from Tiverton withdrew, unable to raise a side.Bovey made 67, and made the Sapphires fight all the way but they got home with one wicket intact on the final ball.
